I feel that the trip to Washington DC, was a great opportunity for many of our clients to be able to advocate for themselves in a productive manner. Many of them have shared in groups and to the community of the importance of attending these trips to Washington and Albany. They are truly humble to know now that they must join the fight to win this battle and I was very proud for those that spoke and shared their stories to Congress and their staffers. Several client’s who had never taken a trip to Washington felt it was a privilege and honor to have been offered the opportunity to say what they felt. They were able to discuss about HOPWA, ADAP and Prevention programs and how it has saved their lives to have places like Harlem United where these services are offered to them. But the need of having these funds continue is important and they are more aware of this now

Thank you for the wonderful opportunity at the AIDS watch. It was a proud moment for me to see the clients true feelings emerge as they met with the respective representatives especially Rep Tim Bishop. He seemed to be the most knowledgeable and caring of all the three representatives. This has given me the understanding as to why their lives are marginalized and what I can do within my scope of practice to help clients meet a common ground. HU clients asked the most intelligent questions and hopefully this will have a big outcome in our quest for more funding within the health reforms. My sincere thanks to all who made this trip a possibility.

It was a wonderful experience for the clients that visited Washington DC, for their first time, to attend the AIDS Watch 2010. They expressed that it was a privileged to be able to voice their opinions and advocacy regarding more funding for the allocations for the HOPWA program, ADAP and for the HIV/AIDS Strategy, that would be instrumental in continuing to receive and for us to provide preventive services, health care , adequate and affordable housing to people that are infected or affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. I as well as the majority of the clients in my group, agree about Tim Bishop, appearing to be the most concern about the issues discussed, and believe, that he will be a strong advocate in addressing them at the legislative level. On behalf of the clients and myself, I would like to extend our gratitude to The National Association of People with AIDS and Harlem United for making this opportunity possible.

It was a huge honor and very humbling to be part of the 2010 AIDS Watch. This was possible for me because of AIDS Project Los Angeles. In 2008 I was diagnosed HIV positive, I was already a year into homelessness and in my 5th battle with cancer. 29 months after it began homeless can to an end. It was 12 months after being told I was HIV positive.

I get my HIV care from a Ryan White clinic and I used HOPWA to move into my apartment. I am not currently on HIV meds, but if my body stops doing the awesome job it is doing now I will need programs like ADAP to help me get my meds. It was an honor to travel with APLA to share my story and speak for many people who are homeless and low income battling HIV and AIDS

As we wait, we will also have to step up our accountability for HIV prevention among HIV positive individuals. At some point, before we receive any more money, we will be asked: and what are people with HIV doing to prevent more infections?

I am the mother of a wonderful son whose dad is of Haitian decent, unfortunately he was murdered twelve years ago and my son is now twenty three and he is still mourns his dad's passing. My words of comfort to you are sent every day once my maker grants me life daily know that I will try my best to be of support to you. Please know that NAPWA is here for you and do let us know how we can be of support to you. Keep strong and know that you are not alone. Michelle Lopez,Board Chair.

As a Black Latina I have to say Dennis Deleon was and still will be a hero to this community. His passing should be a wake up call to all of us on how important it is to go beyond our call of duty for our community. We all have learned so much about Dennis these last few days and what he stood for, he was truly a man of substance.
