Gay Men and HIV, Be Aware!

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

What’s new about Gay men being disproportionately impacted by HIV?  Unfortunately that’s an old story you don’t see written about anymore in the traditional media.

Which is why we at NAPWA (the National Association of People With AIDS) launched National Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on September 27th.  We need to face the continuing, old epidemic with new tools to raise awareness.  This blog, twitter, Facebook, You Tube and other social networking sites can keep HIV within the gay community on people’s minds; encourage testing and responsible behavior; and, help guide those who need care to the appropriate source.

We’re in this together and we’ve linked with aids.gov to help you develop the right new media tools.  Click here to read how.   Never forget those who’ve died.  And remember, until there’s a cure, there’s only us.

Speak Up To End AIDS!

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

As tens of thousands of LGBT Americans and their allies converge on Washington next month to march for equal rights,  they also will remind the nation and the LGBT community that the AIDS epidemic is not over as well as remember the more than half a million Americans who have died from the disease.

The Equality To End AIDS rally and vigil will take place Saturday, October 10, the day before the massive Equality March.  Equality To End AIDS will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 pm on the Ellipse, in front of the White House, and feature an inspiring roster of speakers and performers (mostly HIV+), culminating in a candlelight vigil.  For more info, click here!

Will those of us with HIV be able to get the H1N1 (Swine) flu vaccine?

Friday, September 18th, 2009

We were prompted to look into this by you, our blog readers.

The Centers for Disease Control tells us that as people living with HIV disease we do not appear to be at greater risk than the general population for contracting H1N1 (Swine) flu.  That’s reassuring, but nevertheless the CDC has priortized who should get the new vaccine once it’s availble next month.  And people living with HIV and AIDS are on the list.  We’re fifth on the list, but on the list.

So when one of our readers posted that his doctor didn’t expect to have any H1N1 vaccine available for his HIV+ patients we started checking around.  Turns out other doctors with large HIV practices also don’t expect to be allocated any H1N1 vaccine.  What’s up with that?

We’re checking.  But what about your doctor?  Do they expect to have H1N1 vaccine available?  Let us know, by posting here.  (Your email address will be required, but will not be published, nor shared.)

In the meantime, it’s helpful to read the government’s advice on H1N1 (Swine) flu.  Find it here.

Speak Up for Ryan White!

Urge Your Senators to Sign Letter in Support of Ryan White Program Extension!

Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) is circulating a letter among his Senate colleagues to Senators Harkin and Enzi asking them to pass an extension of the Ryan White Program, with the community consensus recommendations, before the program expires on September 30, 2009. Please call your two Senators and urge them to sign this letter, and then spread this message through your networks to generate additional grassroots calls and emails. You can reach your Senators through the Capitol Switchboard, 202-224-3121.

Please note that only Senators can sign this letter. Ryan White Program advocates should contact their own Senators and urge them to sign on. Advocates should not contact Sen. Lautenberg’s office directly.

CAEAR Coalition will regularly update the “Take Action” page of the web site to show which Senate offices have signed the letter. Please contact us if you have questions or need anything else from our end to make these requests, 202-789-3565 or info@caear.org.
